Mother’s Day is a special day that began in the 1900s. In 1905 Anna Jarvis wanted a way to honor the sacrifices her deceased mom, Ann Reeves Jarvis, and other moms made for their children. She wanted an annual personal day between mothers and their families.
She began gaining financial backing from John Wanamaker, a Philadelphia department store owner that enabled her to organize the first official Mother’s Day celebration. Thousands of people attended the event at the Philadelphia retail store as Anna also hosted it at the Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia.
Because Anna believed American holidays were biased toward men she continued to pursue a campaign to put this holiday on the calendar to honor all mothers.
Her commitment started to pay off when in 1912 many churches, towns, and states began to honor and celebrate Mother’s Day as an annual holiday.
Now, Mother’s Day is celebrated globally, however, traditions vary depending on the country. For example, in Thailand, Mother’s Day is celebrated in August on the birthday of Queen Sirikit.
This special new holiday continues to be celebrated in the United States by giving mothers traditional gifts like flowers, chocolates, and jewelry.
